Tools to Help Non-Profits with Online Storytelling
October, 18 2011 CommentsOften when we're working with clients and talking about enhanced tools for storytelling online, video is where people put their focus. But not every concept or idea is best presented as video and not everyone has the resources to work with it. Amy Sample Ward has a great blog post up at Care2 right now about different online tools that non-profits can use to tell stories online, that go beyond simple text. There are some more examples and tools being discussed over at LinkedIn that are worth checking out.

Social Media for Nonprofit Boards
August, 18 2011 Comments
Update: Our slide deck, and a full recording of this presentation, are now available for viewing - just scroll down to the end of this post. Like many of my colleagues here at Raised Eyebrow, I sit on a couple of nonprofit boards in my spare time - and one of the things that's been rewarding for me when I wear that hat is that I can bring some web-geeky expertise to the table and help my fellow board members understand how they can leverage their online networks as well as their offline ones, to support the causes we're involved in. -
Getting Your Message Out During an Election
August, 9 2011 Comments
Update: Our slide deck from this presentation is now available for viewing - just scroll down to the end of this post. In the nearly 12 years Raised Eyebrow has been in business, we've seen quite a few elections - federal, provincial and municipal - come and go, and with them an abundance of excitement, chaos, and hope for positive change. As a new season of elections looms this fall, we're taking some time to share what we've learned in working with nonprofits and other mission-driven organizations to get their stories and priorities on the table at a time when poll results and politicians' dirty laundry are dominating public discourse. -
Email Newsletters: a) Not Dead, and b) Powerful.
June, 8 2011 CommentsEveryone I know (with the possible exception of a few members of my extended family who live in rural Ontario) is overloaded with email. We complain that we get too much, we unsubscribe from seemingly endless lists, and we feel overwhelmed by inboxes that are bursting at the seams.
I'm ruthless about purging my inbox - anything that can be deleted, is. And I may well remove myself from one email list per day, at the rate I unsubscribe myself from things.
But lately, I've found myself having to remind my clients that there's enormous value in an email newsletter, if you do it right. I'm actually a huge fan of well-written and well-executed email newsletters. Here's why:

Google's Grants for Nonprofits: Improve your reach & impact
May, 30 2011 CommentsIf you're a registered nonprofit and you're not using Google's Grants program, you might want to get on board. I've got lots to say about the benefits of this program, but let's start with these two very appealing benefits:
- Free Google Ads worth up to $10,000 per month.
- A designated "nonprofit" channel on YouTube, also free.
For a long time, these benefits have been available to U.S.-based charities but not up here in Canada. That's changed, and Canadian nonprofits are eligible too.
If this is enough to convince you, and you're ready to go apply right this instant, I won't stop you - here's the link to the application form. But if you want more details first, read on.

Upcoming Appearances
May, 5 2011 CommentsI will be speaking at a couple of events here in Vancouver that may be of interest to readers of this blog:
Make Web Not War (Saturday, May 7) is a part of Open Source Week Canada; it's an event aimed at developers and other techies who are interested in open source and interoperability. I'll be giving a talk called "Curious for a Living," about why it's important for us tech-types to ask smart questions to help our clients get better results. I did a Q&A with one of the organizers about my topic, which you can read on his blog here.

Listening with social media: What keywords should you track?
January, 20 2011 CommentsMore and more of our clients are turning to us for advice on using social media to connect with their communities more deeply online. And for those who are just getting their feet wet with social media, we always counsel starting out by listening.
But how do you listen? Well, there are plenty of ways, but one of the simplest ways to get started is to set up a few Google Alerts to let you know when people are talking about you, your organization, and the issues you're working on.
This week I came across a great list of keywords to get you started setting up you listening program. It's part of a longish blog post, so you'll have to scroll down a ways. You're looking for the Keywords list right near the end.
It's well worth the scroll (and the rest of the post is a good read, too).
