Changing perspectives on Phone calls and SMS
February, 14 2013 CommentsThere are around 6 billion active mobile phones worldwide which exceeds the world population. That's a staggering statistic. It's also a huge market. It should be noted that this number relates to all mobile phones, not smartphones specifically, so "dumb" phones as well. Most of these "dumb" phones allow you to perform two basic actions - make & receive voice calls and send & receive SMS messages. Until recently, it's been somewhat difficult, costly and time consuming to try to target these avenues as part of a marketing, fundraising or outreach campaign. We've all seen those ads for text donations to help send aid to Haiti not long after the massive earthquake. For a small organization, a similar campaign method would have been unfeasible until now. Enter Twilio!

Reading List
April, 3 2012 CommentsI know it's a short week - which for many means squeezing 5 days of work into 4 - but on the off chance you've got some time on your hands (or over the long weekend if you're so inclined) I wanted to share some interesting reads that I've come across in the last week or so:

Do you need an App or just a good Mobile ready website?
October, 13 2011 CommentsThere's a lot of talk about mobile and tablet ready Apps these days, and for very good reason. There are some very impressive and excellent apps out there that are changing the way a lot of us managing information and interact with each other. That said, I just sat in on a webinar for a Mobile Giving app for non-profits and while the technology has certainly come a long way and is pretty darned easy to deploy at this point, I was left wondering whether or not it was what most non-profits need.

Testimonials & Persuasion
September, 22 2011 CommentsI attended the Social Media Week session on Social Good yesterday and a few of the presentations, in particular one given by Melissa Dingmon, got me thinking about concrete ways non-profits can use Social Media tools to help persuade individuals to join their communities.

Social Media for Nonprofit Boards
August, 18 2011 Comments
Update: Our slide deck, and a full recording of this presentation, are now available for viewing - just scroll down to the end of this post. Like many of my colleagues here at Raised Eyebrow, I sit on a couple of nonprofit boards in my spare time - and one of the things that's been rewarding for me when I wear that hat is that I can bring some web-geeky expertise to the table and help my fellow board members understand how they can leverage their online networks as well as their offline ones, to support the causes we're involved in. -
Multi-Step vs. Single Page Checkout
June, 21 2011 CommentsHave you ever tried to purchase something off the internet and been presented with a long tabbed, multi-step checkout? You think to yourself "what am I getting myself into?" You have no idea what they might ask in future parts of the form and so you hesitate before committing to buy something.

Alternately, have you come to the checkout page and it is 7 km long? So long, your hand gets tired of scrolling!
[no visual displayed here because it would be too long for this page]
Either way, you are tempted to abandon your cart and get out of there!

Ecwid: The Simple Shopping Cart Solution
June, 14 2011 Comments
If you haven't heard of Ecwid, and you are in the market for a shopping cart, you should check it out. It is a newish shopping cart system that can be integrated with Drupal or WordPress. Compared to other Drupal/WordPress options it is simple in design/function and it is simple to integrate with your website. I did a happy dance the first time I checked Ecwid out because finally we have a simple solution to offer to clients that is a real shopping cart. -
Google's Grants for Nonprofits: Improve your reach & impact
May, 30 2011 CommentsIf you're a registered nonprofit and you're not using Google's Grants program, you might want to get on board. I've got lots to say about the benefits of this program, but let's start with these two very appealing benefits:
- Free Google Ads worth up to $10,000 per month.
- A designated "nonprofit" channel on YouTube, also free.
For a long time, these benefits have been available to U.S.-based charities but not up here in Canada. That's changed, and Canadian nonprofits are eligible too.
If this is enough to convince you, and you're ready to go apply right this instant, I won't stop you - here's the link to the application form. But if you want more details first, read on.

Upcoming Appearances
May, 5 2011 CommentsI will be speaking at a couple of events here in Vancouver that may be of interest to readers of this blog:
Make Web Not War (Saturday, May 7) is a part of Open Source Week Canada; it's an event aimed at developers and other techies who are interested in open source and interoperability. I'll be giving a talk called "Curious for a Living," about why it's important for us tech-types to ask smart questions to help our clients get better results. I did a Q&A with one of the organizers about my topic, which you can read on his blog here.
