A Workplace that Cares
February, 17 2013 CommentsAn article with the title 3 Reasons to Treat Employees Like Family at Inc.com caught my eye last Sunday morning. I've naturally been thinking a lot about the workplace culture at Raised Eyebrow lately (and will probably be blogging about it a bit more) as we're one of five finalists for the Best Employer award at Small Business BC. But really, it's something that's never too far from my mind.
The article was ultimately a bit of a let down; I was hoping for some hard facts or research behind why valuing your employees as you would anyone who is close to you, makes good business sense. Nevertheless, the third point in the author's list, which is summarized simply as "care" really struck a chord with me.

Best Employer in BC
February, 12 2013 CommentsRaised Eyebrow has made it to the finalist round in the Small Business BC Awards in the Best Employer Category, and I could not be more delighted.
Local and small business feel like buzz words these days, but I can safely say they have always been an integral part of my values system. Growing up in Victoria BC, I was really fortunate to live in a community of vibrant, dynamic small businesses. I grew up frequenting restaurants, clothing stores, bakeries, bookshops and the like owned by family friends or by people who became friends over our years of patronage. My first jobs were all working for small local businesses, where I felt like I was given a chance to learn and gain responsibility.

Makers Gonna Make
February, 6 2013 CommentsWe've long talked about getting a couch or some kind of lounge area at the office. And now, as we're thirteen years into Raised Eyebrow (though admittedly not all at this location), we've finally done it.

The interior design was done by Mak Interiors (Amber Kingsnorth) and we're all in love with it.

3 Month Check-ups for Your Website
October, 11 2012 CommentsWe've recently started implementing 3 month follow-up meetings post a site/app/project launch with our clients as a formal part of our process (meaning it actually goes on the task list then turns into a meeting). I'm writing this post at a coffee shop, just a few minutes after completing one such review and reflecting on why we didn't implement this formally much sooner.
Don't get me wrong, one of the things I love about Raised Eyebrow and our relationship with our clients is that we aim to have a very open door policy with regards to feedback, and we've been very fortunate to cultivate ongoing relationships with the vast majority of our clients. As a result, post-launch follow-ups tend to happen kind of organically in the form of on-going conversations, but it's amazing what happens when you build time in to really engage with a process, instead of just coming across something by happenstance.

I'm back!
September, 4 2012 CommentsA year ago today, on a sunny September afternoon, my two amazing babies, Azalea and Ryan, were born at 31 weeks and 3 days gestation. There is a higher risk of premature labour with twins, but I thought I was being cautious, planning to finish up work at the end of 32 weeks. However, my body had other plans and those babies wanted out!
Born after an hour and 39 minute natural birth, both babies were small (4 lbs and 3 lbs 6 ounces) but vigorous. They spent 38 days at the NICU growing bigger so that we could take them home.
When we brought them home the really hard work began. Sleepless days and nights spent feeding, changing and clothing them… it was about 11 months until we had a moment to breath. Through it all, our family was amazing, spending nearly 5 days a week helping us take care of our growing babes. And they have grown into two amazing little people.

Teaching Drupal at UBC
June, 8 2012 CommentsI've always loved teaching. In my 20's I taught guitar to anyone who wanted to learn. I've never been quite sure why I loved it so much. It may be that I'm good with people, having been a musical performer for many years. It may be seeing the satisfaction in a student's face when they finally 'get it'. So when Emira approched me a few weeks back about a request she'd had from UBC in regards to teaching a Drupal course, I jumped at the opportunity.

Moving On
May, 24 2012 CommentsJust about six months ago, I stepped away from Raised Eyebrow on maternity leave. And while I've spent a lot of the past few months doing the prosaic sort of stuff one expects to be doing when caring for a newborn baby, I've also spent some time pondering my next steps, career-wise. And I've decided that it's time for me to move on from my position as Partner here.
I'm not sure what my next move is going to be; after twelve years of co-leading Raised Eyebrow, I feel I need to step out of this role completely before I move into the next one. But there are a number of possibilities churning around in my brain, and my immediate plan is to spend a few months trying on different hats & brushing up on some new skills.

We Built the Internet Hall of Fame
April, 23 2012 CommentsWhile it's not quite the same as the honour of being inducted, we were pretty thrilled earlier this year when The Internet Society asked our team to build the online home of the Internet Hall of Fame. The Hall of Fame site was built to honour some of our greatest heros, the people whose work has literally made our jobs possible like Vint Cerf and Tim Berners-Lee. Also in this year's round of inductees, Mitchell Baker, Open Source advocate and founding chairperson of the Mozilla Foundation, and a woman we have much respect and admiration for here at Raised Eyebrow.

Our Help Manual
November, 8 2011 CommentsThe lack of user documentation for open-source projects, like Wordpress and Drupal the two Content Management Systems we develop in most frequently at Raised Eyebrow, is a known issue. While a thriving user base and a good google search can often turn up answers to questions not addressed in documentation for a development team, that's not really a viable solution for end-users, in our case clients who are simply trying to maintain and manage their websites. And, since we build a lot of custom Drupal Modules or Wordpress Plugins to meet our client's specific communications needs, we then become the folks responsible for documentation.

2 Big Wins for our Clients at CUPE's Communications Awards
November, 3 2011 CommentsWoo-hoo! We've just learned that two websites we launched this year have won at the 2011 CUPE Communications Awards!

CUPE's awards celebrate top-notch communications in the labour sector, so we are thrilled to see two of our union clients - the Hospital Employees' Union and CUPE Local 79 - be recognized for their websites.
