Our Help Manual
November, 8 2011 CommentsThe lack of user documentation for open-source projects, like Wordpress and Drupal the two Content Management Systems we develop in most frequently at Raised Eyebrow, is a known issue. While a thriving user base and a good google search can often turn up answers to questions not addressed in documentation for a development team, that's not really a viable solution for end-users, in our case clients who are simply trying to maintain and manage their websites. And, since we build a lot of custom Drupal Modules or Wordpress Plugins to meet our client's specific communications needs, we then become the folks responsible for documentation.

Getting control of YouTube via Javascript
October, 7 2011 CommentsRecently I was trying to write a WordPress slideshow plugin that would include YouTube videos. The challenge was that when I play the video I want to pause the slide. On regular picture slides I just needed to add a
click()event listener to the slide object and attach a call to pause jQueryCycle. YouTube, though, refused to take theclick()listener seriously. The solution came to me by reading up on the Youtube player api. -

Raised Eyebrow to the Rescue
July, 19 2011 Comments
Last week our team got to feel like superheros coming to the rescue of a longtime colleague/client with a very quick, but also very satisfying project -- who doesn't like feeling like a superhero? The call came from CUPE Local 79, a Local that represents City of Toronto workers, the Toronto Community Housing Corporation and Bridgepoint Hospital. The challenge: they had a media campaign and ad buy, tied to a campaign, rolling out in roughly a week and their website house was, well not exactly in order. -
YouTube URL Structure Update
July, 5 2011 CommentsYoutube recently updated their URL structure. Now, if you click Share below a YouTube video you get a short URL, with a structure like http://youtu.be/PNyMlswZb-I, instead of the older format http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PNyMlswZb-I.
The shorter URL is nice for sending the URL around to friends or tweeting. However, some Drupal sites that use short codes, such as ">http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PNyMlswZb-I] for embedding Youtube may need to be updated to work with the new URL structure. We'll be checking the sites we've launched and contacting you if your site is among those effected. -
Ecwid: The Simple Shopping Cart Solution
June, 14 2011 Comments
If you haven't heard of Ecwid, and you are in the market for a shopping cart, you should check it out. It is a newish shopping cart system that can be integrated with Drupal or WordPress. Compared to other Drupal/WordPress options it is simple in design/function and it is simple to integrate with your website. I did a happy dance the first time I checked Ecwid out because finally we have a simple solution to offer to clients that is a real shopping cart. -
Redesigning eaves.ca: Online Branding Lessons for Solo Entrepreneurs
August, 10 2010 Comments
I recently redesigned a website for a personal friend and although it wasn't done under the official umbrella of Raised Eyebrow, I found that the project offered some interesting challenges I'd like to reflect upon briefly. -
Being Curious for a Living: WordCamp Vancouver presentation
June, 12 2010 CommentsI spoke today at WordCamp Vancouver - a one-day conference for people who work with WordPress (including developers, designers and users). It was a great event, thanks to the hard work of the organizers. The presenters shared lots of very useful information on design and coding as well as about social media and web culture.
I chose to focus my 25-minute talk on what I think lies below the surface of the work we do as web designers and developers, and that's a more consultative and strategic role that we can play if we choose to (and if our clients let us).
The session was recorded on video, and I'll post that video when I get the link that video is posted below, but for now I thought I would at least share my slide deck - particularly for those in attendance who requested it.

Drupal vs WordPress: Which one is right for you?
November, 9 2009 CommentsHere at Raised Eyebrow, while we have experimented with dozens of Content Management Systems (CMS's), these days we mostly build websites using either Drupal or WordPress.
Why these two CMS's, of the thousands of content management systems available? Both CMS's share several key qualities:
