Getting Your Message Out During an Election
August, 9 2011 Comments
Update: Our slide deck from this presentation is now available for viewing - just scroll down to the end of this post. In the nearly 12 years Raised Eyebrow has been in business, we've seen quite a few elections - federal, provincial and municipal - come and go, and with them an abundance of excitement, chaos, and hope for positive change. As a new season of elections looms this fall, we're taking some time to share what we've learned in working with nonprofits and other mission-driven organizations to get their stories and priorities on the table at a time when poll results and politicians' dirty laundry are dominating public discourse. -
A Multi-Site Drupal Installation for the PSAC
July, 27 2011 CommentsThe Public Service Alliance of Canada is one of Canada's largest unions and represents workers in the Federal Government across the country. The union itself is broken down by regions across the country, and like many large organizations, suffered from a total lack of consistency in terms of the tools and infrastructure they were using for their online communications from one region to the next. In 2010 we were contacted by the PSAC National office to put together a plan for creating one core code base — we proposed Drupal — that would then run individual website for each region. The regional websites would share the benefits of:

Transparent PNGs in IE
July, 26 2011 CommentsThere are lots of ways to achieve working transparent PNG's in IE (Microsoft Internet Explorer). I have found that none of these have succeeded in making life really easy when doing the dreaded cross browser testing and debugging. Until now that is. Today I discovered DD_belatedPNG by Drew Miller. An awesome library with a really strange name :)
With some simple JavaScript you can have transparent PNG's in a matter of seconds. All it takes are 3 steps:

Why We Love EZP Hosting
July, 26 2011 CommentsAs a web studio we spend a lot of time talking about what it takes to build a site but it's just as important to have a place to put it. We’ve tried a lot of different hosts over the years and it’s such a refreshing change to have a great one that I felt like shouting (alright, quietly typing) it to the world. That host for us is EZP.
When choosing a host, you might Google “Top 10 web hosts” and pick out the cheapest and highest-rated but it’s not exactly cut and dry. We’ve had issues in the past with hosts charging hidden fees for easily-enabled features and we realize now that a good rating on a host doesn’t mean anything coming from a reviewer who has never needed any support.

Accessing node flagged status in a Drupal 7 theme
July, 22 2011 CommentsI was recently working on a Drupal 7 project which required updating an Image style on a node based on whether or a flag was set or not.
The Requirements
The specific context was that the nodes were biography nodes and each biography had an image attached. The requirement was to give editors the ability to allow certain bio's to display a large or small version of an uploaded image.
I considered using taxonomy, a CCK field and finally settled on using a flag. Mostly due to the fact that the Flag module places a nice Ajax link on the node for logged in users, allowing them to quickly tag and un-tag the node as needed.
What you need to achieve this is:

Getting Beyond 'Slacktavism'
July, 20 2011 CommentsWhen the trend of creating campaigns and getting folks to "like" them on Facebook was heating up I have to admit I felt pretty darned jaded and unenthusiastic by it. For me, it all came to a head with the Support the Monks in Burma Facebook campaign, which quickly became one of the largest groups on Facebook at the time, which was in 2007. What impact was clicking on a "Like" link really having beyond some basic awareness raising I wondered, and was that awareness raising even enough? I'm not alone in critiquing Facebook activism, and in fact a whole term around it "Slacktavism" (or sometimes Clicktivism) has evolved, referring to basic/simple actions that people can take online that really don't have any actual impact in moving a campaign or issue forward.

Raised Eyebrow to the Rescue
July, 19 2011 Comments
Last week our team got to feel like superheros coming to the rescue of a longtime colleague/client with a very quick, but also very satisfying project -- who doesn't like feeling like a superhero? The call came from CUPE Local 79, a Local that represents City of Toronto workers, the Toronto Community Housing Corporation and Bridgepoint Hospital. The challenge: they had a media campaign and ad buy, tied to a campaign, rolling out in roughly a week and their website house was, well not exactly in order. -
Raised Eyebrow Webinars for Non-Profit Organizations
July, 11 2011 CommentsThis September, we'll be starting a series of webinars on a variety topics for non-profit organizations. Each webinar will be approximately an hour long, including time allotted for questions, are open to anyone interested in the topic, and are free to attend. The topics are drawn from regular themes that emerge out of our strategy sessions with clients and workshops we've given on a smaller scale in the past. They will be presented by the partners at Raised Eyebrow, Lauren Bacon and Emira Mears.
The topics and dates are listed below with links to further descriptions as well as links to GoToWebinar, where you can register for the events. We do hope you'll join us, and if you have suggestions for topics you're interested in having us address in future webinars or workshops, please let us know.

YouTube URL Structure Update
July, 5 2011 CommentsYoutube recently updated their URL structure. Now, if you click Share below a YouTube video you get a short URL, with a structure like http://youtu.be/PNyMlswZb-I, instead of the older format http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PNyMlswZb-I.
The shorter URL is nice for sending the URL around to friends or tweeting. However, some Drupal sites that use short codes, such as ">http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PNyMlswZb-I] for embedding Youtube may need to be updated to work with the new URL structure. We'll be checking the sites we've launched and contacting you if your site is among those effected. -
Accessing Influence with Twitter
June, 30 2011 CommentsA lovely Twitter interaction happened to one our beloved colleagues/clients last week that exemplifies one of the things that I find most interesting and powerful about using Twitter at this moment in time: the low barrier to entry in terms of connections with spheres of influence.
In this particular instance, one of the owners of Lunapads.com, Suzanne Siemens (@luna_gal), posted this tweet:
For those who can't "speak" Twitter, what Suzanne did here was share with her Twitter followers that she:
